WEEK 1: ASSIGNMENT plying our brief biographies, not to exceed three (3) screen lengths. Mention any art-related experiences or desires if any. For my own bio, click "Instructor" under the course designation in the upper-left corner of the Web Tycho homepage.

Use the "Create a Main Topic" button in "Conferences" to enter your bio.

 

WEEK 2 AND 3: ASSIGNMENT FOR CHAPTER 1:

  1. Within three (3) screen lengths (so that it doesn't become too long), summarize the main points of Chapter 1.
  2. Based on your reading of the above chapter, answer the following question: The book says, "Any design is a plan for order." Observe a phenonon around you (at home, at the office, at school, on the street, for example) that represents this particular philosophy the best and describe why you feel the object represents the stated purpose of design.

 

WEEKS 3-4: ASSIGNMENT FOR CHAPTER 2:

  1. Within three (3) screen lengths, summarize the main points of Chapters 3 and 4.
  2. The chapters talk about line and space (pictorial, illusionistic, and actual). Applying these four concepts, describe your own office or room in terms of those concepts.

 

WEEKS 5-6: ASSIGNMENT FOR CHAPTERS 5-6:

  1. Within three (3) screen lengths, summarize the main points of Chapters 5 and 6.
  2. Part I: According to chapter 5, there are four types of form and shape: natural, geometric, abstract, and nonrepresentational. Give one example of each of the four types that are not mentioned in the chapter, and give your brief description for each of the objects you chose.

    Part II: Chapter 6 deals with "texture" represented in various materials. Pick your favorite clothing (dress, shirt, whatever) and describe its texture in terms that are used in the chapter.

 

WEEK 7: MUSEUM PAPER TO START: DON'T FORGET TO VISIT YOUR ON-LINE MUSEUM AND PREPARE THE PAPER.

 

WEEK 8: MUSUEM PAPER DUE.

 

WEEK 9: ASSIGNMENT FOR CHAPTER 7:

  1. Within three (3) screen lengths, summarize the main points of Chapter 7.
  2. Chapter 7 deals with the various aspects of "color." Imagine a sunset, one that you have actually observed and remembered, or one that you can only imagine. Describe the qualities of colors represented in the sunset of your own recreation and mention why such color schemes appeal to your (or our) aesthetic pleasure.

WEEKS 10-11: ASSIGNMENT FOR CHAPTERS 8-9:

  1. Within three (3) screen lengths, summarize the main points of Chapters 8 and 9.
  2. Part I: Chapter 8 deals with "unity and variety," or in music "theme and variation," in which the main theme (constant and repetitive) is give an variation to add different perspectives and interests. The "fall lineup" on television that the networks every fall is considered a classic example of this "unity and variety" or "theme and variation" pattern. Describe why the fall lineup represents this particular pattern.

    Part II: Chapter 9 describes balance, rhythm, and emphasis. Using the book's points, select three objects in your immediate surroundings that apply to each of the three themes and describe why you believe the objects fit the themes.

WEEK 13: ASSIGNMENT FOR CHAPTER 10:

  1. Within three (3) screen lengths, summarize the main points of Chapter 10.
  2. The chapter emphasizes the idea of a "Golden Mean," which suggests moderation in all things. Apply the idea of Gold Mean to your own life and career and describe whether the Mean has been applied to your life and career. Also, compare the thesis of the Golden Mean and American society's value system and conclude whether they are compatible or incompatible, and why.

 

WEEK 14: DON'T FORGET TO VISIT YOUR ON-LINE MUSEUM AND START YOUR PAPER/

 

WEEK 15: YOUR SECOND MUSEUM VISIT PAPER DUE.
